Title: Upper Receiver Action Block?

I'm building an AR upper with one of the kids and had a random thought.  Do I really need an action block for a vice or can i just shape a piece of wood that will fit inside the receiver the exact same way?  Yeah, I know the wood might break, but wood is cheap.  Delrin blocks aren't.

If you didn't want to buy a block you could probably cut one out of nylon cutting board.

But I don't see why you couldn't make one out of wood.
