If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

God created Man, Col. Sam Colt made him equal, John Moses Browning turned equality to perfection, Gaston Glock turned perfection into plastic fantastic junk.

Yeah, good price, even though it?s Chinese crap. Baofeng does actually produce better quality radios, like the AR-152 and the DM-32.  The UV-5R are disposable radios, that?s one of the reasons why they?re so inexpensive.

Like many others, I have several of them. They work adequately for local short-distance comms or contacts via repeaters. With the right package, they also come with many accessories at the base price that are costly add-ons for most other manufacturers. While there are better, more expensive radios available, the UV-5R and its variants provide a great capability for a low price. I also agree that they are "disposable" in that during a crisis or other event I have no problem giving them to someone else to maintain comms. If they get broken or don't come back I would not be upset like I might be if it was an expensive radio. It is all about availability, capability, and budget.

Friends don?t give friends a Baofeng UV-5R.

I do acknowledge that UV-5Rs have usefulness, but would I trust my life to one? No way!  I do have some, but they?re relegated to third level status.  I use to work with them on a professional basis, and typically we had a 10% failure rate per year.

My biggest problem with prepper comms is that folks will spend lots of money on firearms and other gear, but they tend to not want to spend for decent radio equipment.  I hear the argument that a Baofeng UV-5R works as well as an Icom ID-52.  Well, a Saturday night special can kill you just as well as a tricked out Kimber. So, do people readily carry  a Saturday night special , when better firearms are available?  The same applies to the lower end Baofengs, why rely on a radio that does marginally work?  Have you ever looked at the specteral quality of their transmitters?  In the new generation of warfare,  radio transmissions are like a beacon, and the Baofengs more or less shout, hey I?m here!

If you?re going to buy a Baofeng, buy one of their better radios. I use to work with some law enforcement guys on a regular basis, and they usually carried high end radios with brands like Motorola and Harris, most of the radios cost several thousand dollars.  Well, several of them also carried Baofengs for a back-up. I never understood why they would carry a radio that wasn?t waterproof nor impact resistant.  Better than nothing, I suppose.  But a few of them learned the hard way that Baofengs don?t cut it when in rough environmental conditions.  I guess I prefer to give myself the best chance at success, when the SHTF, I won?t be carrying a Baofeng as my primary nor secondary source of communications.

UV5R's are definitely a disposable radio. That's why I have about 20 of them. I have carried the same 5 watt UV5R everyday for about 10 years and it still works. However, for my bugout backpack, I've got 2 of the 10 watters with the 14" long antennas and a ton of charged up large and small Battery Packs. Over the past 50 years in Ham Radio, I've had a bunch of Brand Name HT's and they all quit on me for one reason or another. I think anybody who buys a UV5R should buy a bunch of them. 10 UV5Rs would cost about $300 and 1 really good ICOM would cost about $300. Actually, all HT's are disposable. I've never seen anyone repair one. We just go buy a replacement. The thing that I like about the UV5R is "If you can hear it, you can talk to it". You can even unlock the newer Ham only versions. Am I poo pooing the name brands? Nope. I love my ICOM HF and VHF rigs. If you are going out in the Boonies, you better carry at least 2 Bao Fengs per person. The one thing that I see total knuckleheads do is go out in the Boonies with no extra battery packs.
