In my research for an article on murders committed with long guns, I analyzed the
FBI's 2023 Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) data, the most recent year available. The data reveals key insights into murder weapons, with a notable -11.6% decline in total murders from 2022 to 2023, totaling 19,883 cases. Handguns accounted for 40.3% of these murders (8,018 cases), while long guns-specifically rifles (561 cases) and shotguns (182 cases)-comprised just 3.7% combined. Notably, 5,916 firearm-related murders were reported without specifying the firearm type, suggesting some data gaps in reporting to the FBI.
For perspective, knives and cutting instruments were used in 1,769 murders, surpassing the combined total of rifle and shotgun murders. Other methods, such as blunt objects (355 cases), personal weapons like hands or feet (798 cases), and even drugs or narcotics (307 cases), also contributed significantly. Rarer methods, like explosives (1 case) or drowning (0 cases), were negligible.
Historically,
prior to the 1986 National Firearms Act (NFA), the FBI estimated that "select fire" weapons (e.g., fully automatic firearms) accounted for less than 1% of murders, underscoring their minimal role in violent crime even before stricter regulations.

To contextualize, motor vehicle crashes in 2023 resulted in 40,901 deaths-over twice the number of all murders combined, highlighting the relative scale of different public safety issues.
This data challenges common anti-gun narratives by showing that long guns play a minimal role in homicides compared to other weapons, including knives and even personal weapons. By focusing on precise statistics, we can foster informed discussions about firearm-related crime.
Hopefully, you will find this information useful as you debunk anti-gun sentiment.
