I am almost finished Black Autumn written by Jeff Kirkham & Jason Ross. I started it soon after it came and then I put it down not interested. Not interested because the authors willingly have presented bad information about amateur radio. Every time I read ham radio disinformation in the book, I would just put the book down.

With Kirkham, being a retired Green Beret (29-year veteran) I just do not get it. After all, the roll of the 18E, Communications Sergeant, is probably one of the most crucial parts of any SFOD-A detachment.

Since, Kirkham was a SF guy, he would have cross trained with all members of the detachment. He should know the differences between UHF, VHF, HF and the use of the equipment.

I have about 15-pages to go BUT, just had to express my 2 cents worth.

I will do a sperate review on Black Autumn later.

Late review. Saw the movie in theatres. Really too wholesome for my tastes. The tv show Jerecho was a grittier take and seemed more realistic

Yeah, I liked the Jericho TV series. Haven't seen the movie Homestead yet and will probably wait till it streams on TV.

MrsMac isn't getting around well and the ice & snow is making it a bit more of a challenge.

The book and the movie bring home the time line of events post a SHITF scenario. It might make sense to reread Selco's account from Bosnia. I think D_F put the link up the other day. Here it is again of I am wrong.

I suspect in urban areas things would breakdown quicker than rural. I also suspect that suburbia will act like leftist/HOA area's on steroids with ones neighbors demanding everyone share what they gotz.

Rural area's will be the last to come apart. The drama there will be caused probably by the resident junkies at first then the influx of displaced folks from the cities.

Anyway, interesting to speculate on.

Hey, it might be sooner than later too with the left moaning & groaning about the D.O.G.E. cut backs and the deportation of illegal immigrants.

Stay tuned,

Yes, based on this I began reading Black Autumn, which to me was awful.  Perhaps the new title of the novel should be Belch Awful !  Dull, repetitive, predictable, as JM pointed-out the radio was not only incorrect, but in practical te3rms, it was disinformation. Anything past HT from front gate to 'snipers' ( overwatch security) was incorrect.

I have now read the book Black Autumn as well as viewed the movie Homestead and watched the first two episodes of "Homestead: The Series" which is a continuation of the movie Homestead with the same characters/actors. The storyline is slightly different in the movie than in the book. While I found the book entertaining, I also was frustrated with the lack of research done by the authors regarding basic radio theory and usage as has already been discussed. I agree that just letting everyone in is a bad plan. If that situation was real, then there would be a constant flow of people to the Homestead gate. Once they let the first group of "everyone" in, it would be much harder to keep others out as the crowd of refugees continues to grow outside the gate.

I don't understand how a dedicated wealthy prepper who has the wherewithal to purchase the large property, all the stuff that might be needed on a homestead, including food, animals, weapons, and ammo, and can put together a MAG and security team as it appears was done, did not plan better for the interpersonal issues that are bound to happen in any group under stress. Not planning for what might develop in a WORL situation is foolish.

I did note that the book seems to focus on the protagonist and hardly addresses the rest of the MAG. In real life, those people would be more involved and have much more to say about how things are run, and would probably offer alternate solutions. This was alluded to in the series but never developed.

While I did enjoy reading the book as well as watching the movie & series, there are several issues in each that a knowledgeable prepper would have planned for that the book/movie ignores. Ah well, it was obviously written for entertainment, not for educational purposes.

To be fair, writing a book or book series is hard work.  I am generally pleased when I see a post apoc novel published. Most series begin well and end poorly.  There are only so many ideas and most of these deteriorate into a soap opera, but with guns, looters and cannibals in the mix to keep it topical.

YMMV -

Angel studios "Homestead": I saw the movie and just want to ask if there are other episodes available on Angel? Just to lazy to look for myself.

I saw a clip of the HOMESTEAD series on YouTube and it looks like the show may be better on the action
