Antenna for the field
« on: June 12, 2025, 08:02:13 AM »

After taking ARRL?s Basic and Intermediate EmComm courses and multiple IC courses this week, I?m ready to get more equipment for a Radio Go Bag. Maybe we will have it all by field day and we can try setting it up. Will you please give your thoughts about these antennas:

https://myantennas.com/wp/product/efhw-8010-1k-icas/ - on sale

https://myantennas.com/wp/product/efhw-8010/

https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/cha-emcomm-iii-p

We will be getting a power source and laptop too, but the antenna is the hardest choice!

https://www.spooltenna.com/ - I like this one the best, but it doesn?t cover 80m

Any advice would be appreciated.

The Myantenna end fed half waves are decent, I have at least one.  It?ll be one of the first antennas I put up at our new house, because it?s so easy to install.  The Chameleon antennas are generally overpriced, that?s not to say that they?re not good antennas. They?ve good, but you can find the components needed for their antennas on eBay for a lot less.

There?s a dealer on Etsy that sells spool antennas, not too expensive and good quality, I have one.  If you have a large budget, you might consider a Buddipole. I?ve operated all over the world using a Buddipole, it?s compact, and effective, but not cheap.

My XYL and I are going to be operating portable at a local county fair in late July, and one of the antennas we plan on using is a Comet CHA-250HD vertical which covers 3.5-57.0 MHz. Again, it?s not cheap, but they work, I have two.  They can collapse down to a manageable size, and can be erected in a few minutes.

The end fed antennas can be built inexpensively, I?ve built a couple, and I wanted to use one of my home builts, but they?re in a box somewhere in storage, and at this time I don?t have the time to build another one.  I haven?t even had a chance to put up one of my other antennas at the new QTH.  My XYL thinks that showers, toilets, etc. are more important. Imagine that!

Anymore, I build all of my HF antennas. Here is a link to one that I wrote about https://www.americanpartisan.org/2019/12/building-a-simple-affordable-high-quality-multi-band-antenna/

I have have received many emails from folks who have built this antenna and love it.

Right now I am building an OCF (Off Center Fed) antenna using a 4:1 balun and NO ladder line. The balun is from Balun Designs and it is the model 4116et balun. I will write an article up when it is done. I will build it at Field Day this year and use it there. I have a few folks signed up who are newbies to help out.

Nice article, thanks. I helped build an antenna a couple of weeks ago at a club event. At this point, I just want to knock out my To Do and To Get List. Sending the article to my husband and saving it. We ordered the EFRW from etsy for $91. We finally ordered the EpicPwrGate from WestMountain, a Lifepo 4, and a Panasonic Toughbook. Hope we can set up a field station for the first time at Field Day. Not sure why my husband is suddenly willing to purchase items on my wish list, but I will take it. We even got two of the BTech UVPro Radios, he ordered extra antennas for them today.  Interesting timing too, today we were invited to see the county's ham room at the EOC. They need hams to volunteer.
