Plastic Money
« on: July 27, 2025, 01:52:14 AM »
We are all guilty of using plastic money. Yep, even me, but I do my best to throw a curve ball at Big Brother. I use my credit card pretty much for gas and I always buy it at a station very close to home. Big brother only knows how much gas I buy but he doesn't know which vehicle I put it in because I use High Test in both vehicles. Some folks fill up at home and then go someplace 50 or 100 miles away and then fill up again before coming home. BAD IDEA. Now Big Brother knows where you went, when you left to come home, how much gas you bought, what you paid for it, where you bought it, what the time and date was, etc. Why not just stop using my plastic money all together? If you don't use it, the bank will cancel it for lack of use. Now, I actually do use it once in a while for other things. If I buy something from Amazon or stay in a Motel, you pretty much have to use a credit card. Some Motels won't take cash. I carry cash and use the old rule of Never keep any more money in your pocket than you can afford to lose. Never keep any more money in the Bank than you can afford to lose. Never keep any more money at home than you can afford to lose. As a side story...... I have a dear friend who works hard but makes very little money. They have enough to either feed their family or pay their utility bills. Hmmmm...... If I help them out by writing a check, then there is a record, and they have to pay income taxes on it. If I give them a bit of cash, so they can eat, then Big Brother doesn't know squat. We can't live without leaving a footprint but the smaller the footprint, the better. Big Brother loves Credit and Debit Cards, but he hates Cash.

I have gotten into that style.  Budget partially requires it.

But generally if they don't take cash, I don't buy there.  Amazing how much easier it is to save money when you have to dig in your pocket, get out a wallet or clip, count out real live money and give it away.

Makes you think a bit longer and more detailed about what you are doing and its effects.  Much more than the idea of swipe the plastic and I will get it later.

But the later idea is interesting because should there be a grid blackout for a month or 3, I have more cash under the fence post and the credit card is screwed.

I don't quite follow PK.  Where else is there?  I agree with the premise of using cash instead of the credit record.

Zane... I use the three place rule because if I'm robbed, I still have the other 2/3's. If the bank goes under, I still have the other 2/3's. If my home is burglarized while I'm away, I still have the other 2/3's. It certainly wouldn't be unreasonable to add a 4th place like burying some in the yard. Since I'm a Silver Stacker, I don't keep it all in one place. A Burgler might find some of it, but they won't find all of it. I've even considered keeping a few hundred dollars in each vehicle, but I've just never gotten around to doing it. None of us will ever be 100% secure, but the old adage about not keeping all our eggs in one basket certainly applies to us Preppers. Now, are there any flaws in my prepping? You bet there are some flaws. There are some major holes in my placement of Guns and Ammo. Any Prepper who thinks that they have it all covered is just lying to themselves. My philosophy is, "Never believe anything the Government tells me and always be more prepared than my neighbors."

I use a card for petrol also. The reason is laziness. Typically, I frequent stations that take a card at the pump. Beats me having to go into the shop/register twice.

Some cards are good on gas purchases.  My Discover now has a 5% credit on any gas station.  That make a $3 gallon down to $2.85.

Fine by me.  Otherwise, I do the cash thing.

At Kroger, they have a limit of 35 gallons on their cents off for purchases (a dime for $100) but with 4 point per dollar (rather than 1) on Fridays and 2 for 1 Amazon cash card purchase its easy to get 50 cents or more a gallon off.

My wife and I have gotten to about 1 fill up a month and keeping rotating lawn mower cans in case one car goes low early, or the lawn needs mowing.
