Hello from the Highlands of Maine
« on: July 31, 2025, 09:33:36 PM »
I stumbled across this forum from a link from one of the ham radio members that are on the Early Warning Network in the Ham Radio Hub. Veteran of the US Army 8 years active duty with another 6 in the guard. Got my ham radio licence way back in 1992 and I'm still a tech. I know, I know, I need to study and at least get my general. I have been disabled since 2016 due to spinal issues from my time in the Army, so I sit at my desk tracking aircraft on ADS-B Exchange and have my feed through FlightAware dump1090. Have several scanners set up to monitor public safety, civilian and military aircraft especially the comms from the 101st ARW located in Bangor. Just picked up a new DMR radio and that is the Baofeng DM-32UV, so I will be learning to build the code plug for that radio. Analog stuff is way easier than DMR. But anyways, have commo experience in Civil Air Patrol as a former wing Director of Communications which I had HF access and also participated in SHARES, along with being a former member of Army MARS long before the new changes took place and did HF there. Now I have comms with the SAR Team that I'm on. Gotta get back in the game before its too late.

Welcome to the group, Sir, from the Cumberland Plateau in middle Tennessee.  I do occasionally get up to southern Maine, as I have family there.  One of my closest ham friends lived in Yarmouth, he passed away some time ago.  Seems like the hosstraders hamfest (NEARfest) is a couple months away, one of my favorite hamfests.  Do you know Tim, WA1HLR?

Welcome srtmedic

Great eclectic group here many are hams but many are not. We do a Tuesday night digital and phone net under the ERIN banner. You can check out the SOI in the Radio Board. Being a tech you can only listen however, it might be just the nudge you need to get your General.

We have several UP members up in Maine/NH area. Hopefully they will reach out too.

Last, there is a lot of good stuff in the archives. Do not be hesitate checking 'em out.

Welcome

Welcome aboard!

This is a good group, HF , at least weekly net monitoring until your General comes through, might be ENJOYABLE AND OCCASIONALLY useful   :bravo:   We use the FLdigi software plus FLmsg running alongside it.  Tuesday nights are the usual net, detail to be found in the SOI on this site. There is also a voice net, on the hour following the digital net, but digital is generally VERY robust in weak signal conditions.

I envy your monitoring capabilities and should probably do my work to improve my own system( local scanners for public safety/situational awareness in our two counties ). My ADSb monitoring is only using the online tools at the moment and internet based emergency comms is no comms at all, IMHO.

So, please join us in any manner that you can - monitoring, until you've got your General.
